For the Love of Books

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved books.  Some of my earliest childhood memories are of books, and I was lucky enough to have parents who regularly read to me, feeding that love from the time I was a baby.  As a toddler, I could recite my copy of Cinderella and even knew when to turn the pages.  As an adult, books help me to escape from stress, have ignited my own creativity, and I love to talk about them and collect them. In recent years, I’ve also started reviewing them, and I often receive advance copies in exchange for review.  While I do have a ‘bookstagram’ account on instagram, the platform has changed in recent years, causing me to lose the engagement of my small following.  I thought a book blog might be another fun way to reach people who care about books like I do!

Just to be clear, this will not be a place where politics are discussed regularly, but it came to my attention over the last couple of days that it’s quite possible that books from the US will soon be subject to tariffs upon entering Canada.  If this happens, it will be hugely damaging to all of our independent booksellers, of which my city of Victoria happens to have many.   Russell Books, Bolen Books, Munro’s, Books & Shenanigans, Ivy’s and Tanner’s Books to name a few!  I feel so privileged to be able to walk into a bookstore and buy a book! I love and support all of these stores when I can, and I hope that they don’t go anywhere.  If book prices go up, it’s going to be harder for them to stay afloat, as well as a strain on our public libraries, which I also use frequently.  While we should all support Canadian authors, many of their books are printed and bound south of the border.  We’ll have to wait to see what happens, but I thought this seemed like a good time to really lean in to my book addiction!

I plan to share lots of book reviews, mostly literary fiction, historical fiction, thrillers and mysteries.

What do you like to read? Do you have a favourite genre?
